The world’s biggest and most powerful bird of prey

Every birder and wildlife photographer wants to see the majestic, elusive Harpy Eagle, the world’s biggest and most powerful bird of prey. Until 26 May 2017, serious nature travelers spending a week in lodges or research camps in even the remotest, wildest corners of the Amazon (for instance, on the following wilderness rivers: Manú, Upper Tambopata, Heath, and Las Piedras) enjoyed approximately one chance in ten thousand of seeing and photographing that bird well.

Harpy Eagles guaranteed

All that has changed. Thanks to the new and unique method of locating Harpy Eagle nests developed by our scientific advisor, Dr. Charles A. Munn, we can guarantee that even on a three-day visit to our set of active Harpy nests near Alta Floresta, Brazil, you will see Harpies well, and probably take very good photos. If you spend three days with our Harpy Team in Mato Grosso, Brazil, your chances of getting good photos is 99%. For example, from 26 May to 1 July 2017, 40 out of 40 full-day visits to our favorite Harpy nest yielded excellent sightings of one or more full-grown Harpy Eagles. You have to love that 100% success.

Six active nests under our exclusive management

As of 1 July 2017, we have six active Harpy nests located in northern Mato Grosso State, Brazil under our exclusive management. All of these nests lie within a half-day drive of Alta Floresta, an easily-accessible, modern city that is reachable in only one hour by commercial flights from the “Jaguar Capital of the World”, Cuiabá. Our favorite nest at the moment is located only one hour by car from Alta Floresta. For twice as much fun, however, in July 2017, we are opening for visitation a second very beautiful Harpy nest located six hours by car from the city.

Extend your Jaguar Extreme

Extend your Jaguar Extreme with our Harpy Eagle Expedition. Although we suggest three nights, currently the astounding proximity of the closest nest to Alta Floresta makes it possible to see Harpies in only one night away from Cuiabá.

One, two or three nights

If you come before 1 October 2017, a one-night extension would work to at least see Harpies well, though we still recommend at least two or three nights if you wish to shoot some excellent photos. If you come on or after 1 October 2017, plan to spend at least three nights, as we might be featuring two different nests that each are located 5–7 hours by road and river from Alta Floresta.

25-meter-tall Harpy Towers

At the nest only one hour outside of town, we currently offer viewing of the Harpies from the top of one of our custom-built, 25-meter-tall Harpy Towers. Access to the top of the tower, located just 25 meters from the nest, is by walking up low-rise, conventional stairs that are easy to use.

Safety of the birds is ensured by consultation with leading experts

Thanks to years of careful habituation, the Harpies at our nests are completely unafraid of humans and do not mind being observed and photographed from as little as 20-35 meters away. To ensure the safety of the birds, for many years now the most famous PhD Harpy researchers, Eduardo Alvarez and Alexander Blanco, have been our main behavioral consultants. From 1990 until the present, Drs. Alvarez and Blanco have managed 20 Harpy nests for international TV documentaries and for private photographers. In May 2017, Dr. Blanco gained much-deserved international recognition when he was awarded the highly-prestigious Whitley Award for wildlife conservation, thanks to his pioneering work in conserving Harpy Eagles in his native Venezuela.

Viewing from the tower or the ground

Although the viewing from the tower is best, if you do not handle heights well, you also may view the birds from the ground using binoculars, scopes, or long lenses.

Best available lodging

Our Harpy Eagle Expedition will always offer the best lodging that one can reach in a manageably short period of time to get to

the nest each day by dawn and to leave the nest no earlier than sunset. Currently, we are offering acceptable, air-conditioned hotels in Alta Floresta or in another, smaller city that is 25 minutes closer to the closest nest. In the case of the second nest that we are bringing on line in July 2017, we have secured air-conditioned lodging within a 40-minute drive.

Future walk-in tents near nests

In the future, in order to sleep within 15 minutes of some nests, we may offer 15-square-meter, walk-in tents equipped with real twin beds or one double bed, simple but effective private bathrooms in each tent, and all-night electricity to power pedestal fans that can be moved around to point straight at you for excellent cooling while you edit photos, read, or sleep.
